About Dr. William C. Darby

​Education and Experience

Dr. Darby majored in Psychobiology at Swarthmore College and obtained his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then completed his adult psychiatry residency and forensic psychiatry fellowship training at UCLA. He is double board certified in Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry.

Dr. Darby completed his four-year psychiatry residency training at UCLA. He then completed further subspecialty training in forensic psychiatry at UCLA.

He was awarded the Rappeport Fellowship by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) in 2016, the Laughlin Fellowship by the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP) in 2017, the UCLA Outstanding Teaching Award in 2017, and the Howard Zonana Award for Best Teacher in a Forensic Fellowship Program by AAPL in 2017. He has made over 25 national and international presentations, published multiple first-author textbook chapters and peer-reviewed research papers, and his writings have been recognized with three Shirley Hatos Prizes awarded by UCLA.​

Dr. William C. Darby is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Forensic Psychiatrist.

Awards and Activities

Dr. Darby is the Director of the UCLA Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program and is nationally recognized as a leader in forensic and clinical psychiatry winning prestigious fellowship awards and teaching honors including the Howard Zonana Award for Best Teacher in a Forensic Fellowship Program by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL), Laughlin Fellowship award by the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP), UCLA Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award, Rappeport Fellow, American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, among others.

He received numerous national awards recognizing him as one of the best psychiatry residents and forensic fellows in the country. He was awarded the prestigious Rappeport Fellowship by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, which is awarded to the six most outstanding psychiatry residents from the United States and Canada. He was also awarded the prestigious Laughlin Fellowship by the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP), selected for being most likely to make a significant contribution to the field of psychiatry. 

As Health Sciences Clinical Assistant Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, he regularly lectures UCLA medical students, psychiatry residents, psychiatrists, and other doctors on a range of psychiatric topics as well as giving national and international lectures. He won the Outstanding UCLA Teaching Award in 2017.

 

Additionally, he is a member and has been appointed to numerous leadership positions for professional psychiatric organizations such as the American College of Psychiatrists (Laughlin Fellow and Member), American Psychiatric Association (Member for the Council on Psychiatry and the Law), and American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (Councilor, Chair of Judicial Action Committee, Past Chair of Ethics Committee).


Dr. Darby is also the Past President of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry (ASAP).
